The following rules apply to all competitors, all dispensations must be emailed at least 7 days prior to the contest for consideration. The following rules derive from the Canterbury Centre Rules.
1. Introduction

1.1.1 The objectives of this document and the South Island Solo Drumming Championships (SISDC) with respect to solo Side drumming and solo Bass & Tenor drumming competitions are as follows:

2.1 The Contest Organiser
2.1.1 The Contest Organiser shall manage and run the competition activities on Contest day.
2.2 Competitor’s Responsibilities
2.2.1 Competitors shall be responsible for reporting their attendance on the day of the contest, noting their time of play and for being ready to compete when their position in the order of play arrives. No changes to time schedule will be permitted unless sanctioned by the organiser. If a steward/runner advises that you are competing earlier or later than your designated time it is your responsibility to adhere to their decisions. It is the performers duty to ensure their clock is in sync with the organisers clock. It is also the performers duty to ensure they turn up at their board 2 minutes prior to their scheduled performance time.
2.3. All Side drummers shall provide their own piper(s). All Bass & Tenor drummers shall provide their own piper(s) and side drummer. Drum Pad entrants do no require any melodic accompaniment, this is optional.
2.3.2 Competitors shall signal the adjudicator when they are ready to commence their performance.
2.3.3 Any competitor who interferes with, threatens, or uses abusive language towards the adjudicators, officials, stewards, or members of the Contest Organising Committee shall cause themselves to be liable for suspension from further competitions for as long as the Organiser decides.
2.3.4 The same penalty shall apply to situations involving the abuse of private property at the Contest site.
2.4 Splitting an Event
2.5.1 If there are more than twenty (20) competitors in an event, that event may be divided into two or more sections and designated as such.
2.6 Order of Play
2.6.1 All orders of play and the start time for each event shall be posted at the event area prior to the commencement of the competitions. They will also be available on this website.
2.6.2 Competitors should be ready to play in the posted order. It is the competitors responsibility to be there on time for their event.
2.6.3 If given, posted competitor times are always subject to change at the discretion of the Steward for the event. Anyone who refuses to cooperate with the steward on this matter will be disqualified from that event.
2.7 Accompanying Performers
2.7.1 Side drummers shall perform their events accompanied by a minimum of one to a maximum of two pipers. Drum Pad entrants do no require any melodic accompaniment, this is optional.
2.7.2 Bass & Tenor drummers shall perform their events accompanied by one Side drummer and a minimum of one to a maximum of two pipers. A recording is also acceptable.
2.8 Communication of the Selected Music
2.8.1 For events where submission of more than one tune/set is required, the adjudicator shall select the tune/set from the competitor’s list submitted with their entry form.
2.9 Performing without the Aid of Music .
2.9.1 All competitors shall perform their event without the aid of printed music.
Drum Pad entrants may use sheet music.
2.10 Acceptable Highland Dress
2.10.1 Competitors may be prevented from competing and accepting trophies onstage for not wearing acceptable and properly worn highland dress. Kilt, shirt, hose and shoes are the minimum requirement. For beginners, smart attire is recommended.
2.2 Competitors will play the correct music as described in the event listing. The correct number of parts must be adhered to. No variations on this will be accepted and will result in Disqualification if the adjudicator believes this is the right decision. Two Three Pace Introduction rolls must be played at the start of each performance with the only exception being the Strathspey & Reel event in Novice. For this particular event, the piper should start their drones, and the drummer should count into the tune with 4 beats.
3. Grades and Grading
3.1 Grades
3.1.1 Side Drumming grades shall be classified, in ascending order of ability, as Drum Pad, D Grade, C Grade, B Grade and A Grade. Side drummers shall compete in one grade only- unless otherwise agreed upon by the contest organiser.
3.1.2 Tenor Drumming grades shall be classified, in ascending order of ability, as Novice, Intermediate and Advanced. Bass Drumming shall be one Open Event only. Bass & Tenor drummers shall compete in one grade only.
3.1.3 Grades shall be determined by ability and not by age, sex or affiliation, with the exception of confined or special events as defined by the Contest Organiser.
3.2 Grading
3.2.1 Competitors shall compete in the grade appropriate for their ability, as determined by the Contest Organiser.
3.3 A competitor who chooses to appeal his/her grading shall make the appeal in writing to the Contest Organiser.
Beginners = Drum Pad Event. (must not have competed in the "drum class" before) Some individuals may be granted permission to play up into the D grade event.
4. Music Requirements
All Music Requirements are set out on the Entry Page of this Website.
5. Results
All adjudicators will give a placing for each competitor.
5.1 Adjudicators shall be allotted up to five minutes at the end of each event to arrive at a decision. The maximum number of prizes awarded shall be based on the number of competitors who begin their performance, as shown below :
less than Three competitors = one (1) prize
Three competitors = two (2) prizes
Four or more competitors = three (3) prizes
5.2 No ties are permitted. An aggregate result will be decided on MSR preference, or Compound Time March Preference in the lower Grades.
5.3 To be eligible for a prize at each contest, the competitor must compete in all events within their Grade and achieve a placing in each. (A commended or HC will not count)
5.4 The Grand Aggregate at the end of year will be based on results from the three contests throughout the year. The aggregate will be tallied using the following points calculations :
1st place aggregate for the grade in each round - 9 points
2nd place aggregate for the grade in each round - 5 points
3rd place aggregate for the grade in each round - 2 points
Any ties will be broken by the drummer who has the most points (in the last round of the year) in the MSR event for the A Grade Snare, B Grade Snare, Open Bass and Intermediate tenor, or the Compound March event in Drum Pad and Novice Events. The aggregate points will be doubled for the last event of the year.
6. Entries
Once you have submitted your entry, your payment is non-refundable.
The event may be cancelled or postponed by the organisers in the event of lack of entries. All monies will be refunded if that is the case.
By entering you agree to photos possibly being taken of the competitor and being used for social media promotion.
